KUALA LUMPUR – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman’s infant party Muda will be contesting in six seats for the upcoming Johor polls on March 12, with the blessing of two out of three Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties.
In a joint statement by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Muda president Syed Saddiq, the trio said they have come to an agreement where they will not contest against one another.
“Amanah, DAP and Muda had a series of discussions on seat allocation to face the Johor state election. After the meetings, we have unanimously decided on three main goals:
1. Ensuring that Amanah, DAP and Muda candidates will not contest against each other in the same seats;
2. Focusing the efforts of Amanah, DAP and Muda machinery to help our candidates win; and
3. Forming the Johor state government to ensure the people can achieve their dreams.”
The seats allocated for Muda are Tenang, Bukit Kepong, Parit Raja, Machap, Puteri Wangsa and Bukit Permai.
The trio added that for the state election, the three parties will move together as strategic partners even though Muda is not joining the PH coalition.
They claimed that this is in line with the “Large Tent” principle, which aims to unite all political parties ready to take on the ruling Barisan Nasional/Perikatan Nasional administration.
Previously, the youth party leader had confirmed that seat negotiations were running smoothly.
A glaring omission in the joint statement is the signature of PH chairman and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – whose party had oddly decided to contest the state polls under its own party logo instead of the coalition banner.
However, it did say that negotiations and discussions between Muda and PKR are still ongoing.
Responding to online queries on social media by the public and its supporters later, Muda vice-president and co-founder Dr Thanussha Xavier clarified that the party will be contesting under its own banner instead of the collective PH flag.
